Drum and dance has a long history, with people on every continent, in nearly every culture, coming together to connect, celebrate life, and heal their communities through music and creative expression.
Global Groove at the Commons will be a cultural exchange experience that offers the opportunity for participants to explore rhythm making, cultural dance movements, and discover new connections to self and others.
With the goal of promoting unity, the event is a welcoming environment that creates space for people from all cultural backgrounds to come and contribute to building a collective sound and express themselves through dance.
The event will begin with a drum circle (loosely facilitated to provide direction while still offering creative freedom to the group). It will then transition into a movement celebration, consisting of a portion of facilitator-led African/Diaspora-based movements followed by a free-style dance sharing circle.
No experience necessary, we welcome ALL people of all abilities— both new and experienced dancers, movers, drummers, and musicians. It takes a village!
Participants are encouraged to bring a drum, shakers, or other percussion instruments if desired. (If not enough instruments/participants, recorded drum and/or world music will be provided to play and dance along.)
